Vote for your fellow grads on youtube!
By Philip J. Hagen on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 @ 22:55 GMT
All Classes
I received the following from some '96ers hoping for your support in voting up their finalist video in the Nature Valley Granola Bar "Where's Yours?" Competition. Please take a look and vote them up!!
-------

My husband and I are both USAFA graduates from the class of 1996.

We are currently stationed at Misawa Air Base, Japan.
It has been a fantastic assignment, and we have been able to share that with a lot of people through an online movie contest we have entered.

Nature Valley Granola Bars and youtube.com are sponsoring the “Where’s Yours?” movie contest. It is a worldwide contest to make a movie about your own special place in nature.

We submitted our short movie (6minutes long) into the contest featuring the rural Japanese area around Misawa, with a focus on Hakkoda Mountain. Our movie was selected as a top 10 finalist. The winner is currently being decided by online vote. The voting ends March 13th!

Details on the movie listed below in this email - or you find all the information at www.misawamovie.com.

My husband had a couple live interviews on the local AFN radio station. The radio station also ran radio spots on the movie throughout the voting.

We have had a story in the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Here is the link to the Stars and Stripes story.

Also, we had a feature segment on AFN news television, which ran both through PACAF and on the Pentagon Channel.

Thanks-
Major Jennifer (Trost) Vecchione

AOG Critical Issues Discussion
By Philip J. Hagen on Thu, 11 Nov 2004 @ 02:31 GMT
All Classes
  Dear fellow graduate:
As you probably know, there is an ongoing attempt by a large group of graduates to bring "democracy" to the AOG. This group wants the present Board of Directors to hold free and open elections and to allow the By-Laws to be amended by the membership as a whole, and not just the Board of Directors. To insure that all graduates are aware of this on-going effort, could you please publish the following announcement in your web site and/or circulate it to your chapter members?
Those of you who have not signed up to have access to USAFAToday.com should consider doing so if you are interested in issues concerning the national AOG Board and how it represents your interests as a USAFA graduate.
There are several critical issues being discussed on the website, such as the governance of the AOG. You can check out the issues and make your own decision about how the current AOG Board and Staff are representing your interests. If you want to have a role in what is happening, you can log on and learn about the issues and provide your input. The next national AOG Board meeting is this weekend. To log on to www.USAFAToday.com you need to have your AOG number which can be found in the Register, or you can call the AOG at 719-472-0300. The critical issues are discussed under Terrazzo.
If you have contact with other grads, please feel free to pass on this website to them."

John Boria passed away earlier tonight. He was a great friend to me and everyone else that knew him. I got to spend some time with him in June and July after not seeing him in 6 years and he was the same fun person I met at basic training in 94.

Update: The Official AF News announcement has been released.

Excellent Article
By Philip J. Hagen on Sun, 6 Jun 2004 @ 01:57 GMT

I was passed the following link to an article that I personally think should be receiving much more press than it probably will.
It doesn't politicize the war in Iraq. It provides neither criticism nor support of our country's actions there. It merely brings to light the fact that there are countless airmen, soldiers, sailors, and marines (not to mention the other US personnel - governmental and contractor) who are putting their lives in harm's way each day to better the lives of those that they may never meet face-to-face.
Please take a few moments to read this link - I hope that it will help to remind all of us that the heroic actions of our troops in theater should never be overlooked or forgotten.

2003 Olmstead Scholar Announcement
By Philip J. Hagen on Mon, 24 Feb 2003 @ 16:36 GMT
All Classes
The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation has asked us to be sure that you are aware of your eligibility for an exciting opportunity - The Olmsted Scholarship.
Each year, the Olmsted Scholar Program offers educational grants for two years of graduate study in a foreign language in a foreign country to career line officers from the four branches of the U.S. military. The Air Force is currently authorizing five scholars annually. The primary qualification for selection is an outstanding record as an officer. You are eligible if, as of 1 April, you have completed at least three (3) full years of continuous active duty service but have not completed eleven (11) years of continuous active duty service. You do not have to be proficient in a foreign language to be eligible. Language training is provided for you and your spouse. Spouses also receive grants for other expenses incident to participation in the program.
Olmsted Scholars are nominated by the Air Force to study at foreign universities of their choice. Final selections are made every April by the Board of Directors of the George and Carol Olmsted Foundation. The Olmsted Scholars enroll as full-time students and study usually in a language other than English while interacting with the residents of the countries in which they are living. They are expected to live on the economies of their host countries, and travel widely.
The Olmsted Scholar Program originated in 1960 with the purpose broadly educating those young career military line officers who exhibit extraordinary potential for becoming this country's future military leaders.
Scholars comprise a growing body of talented and uniquely-educated officers who are a significant asset to the United States. As a group, they have followed a pattern of early promotion, including twenty-eight who now have achieved general officer and flag rank.
We encourage you to find out about this extraordinary opportunity by visiting the Olmsted Foundation website at www.olmstedfoundation.org. From there you will find links to the Air Force Personnel Center site for application information.

Advertising
By Philip J. Hagen on Sun, 16 Jun 2002 @ 23:50 GMT
All Classes
  All:
We've been active for more than a year and a half now, and have had nothing but success. Traffic has been steady, and I've heard from lots of folks that the site meets a genuine need -- and meets it well. This was always and will remain our first goal in running the site.
One thing that you may have noticed is the lack of advertising on our pages. Most websites today have one form or another of banner ads, which generate revenue for the folks who run the site. This revenue offsets the costs involved with operating a website. (For starters, we have about $2500 of equipment, $70 per month in bandwidth, and untold hours in coding (1000 ) and upkeep such as lost passwords (5 weekly) to keep this one rolling - it adds up!!)
To alleviate a bit of the financial burden, you'll soon start seeing banner ads at the top of the USAFALocator.com pages. I promise to do my best to keep the services advertised relevant to our users (i.e. no "Join the Army!" ads!) and not have them detract from the overall experience. I'd hoped to have a subsidy from the AOG to help, but that never materialized. Other options we are looking into are the "honor system" offered by Amazon.com or Paypal's service to 'e-mail' money.
We still plan to add more classes, and offer more customized services to those who will be separating this coming year.
If you think you know of a company that would be interested in reaching a target audience of Academy grads, please feel free to contact us and we'll see if something can be worked out.
Thanks for making this site successful, and let me know if you have any other thoughts on this.
